Our story

Joan Llopart Pujó was born in Gelida, a small town in the Alt Penedès wine country. When he opened his own place in Barcelona, he named it after his hometown: Gelida. That was 1946.

For years, Gelida operated as a genuine neighbourhood wine cellar: wine sold in bulk, by the petricó and by the traditional measures — a quarter litre, half, three-quarters, a full litre. The nine 240–280 litre barrels still hanging near the ceiling are witnesses to that era; they're no longer filled, but nobody has ever considered taking them down.

In the 1960s, the premises expanded into a former coal shop next door, and the space has been renovated in pieces ever since — the current bar counter, for instance, dates from the late 1980s. Gelida's authenticity isn't about a room frozen in time; it's something harder to fake: eighty years serving the same neighbourhood families, without a single break.

Gelida was also, for years, home to the Penya Cinc Copes, a supporters' club tied to Barça's legendary five-trophy squad of the 1951–52 season — one of the most glorious years in the club's history. Coaches used to leave from right here for the match on game days, packed with members in their scarves.
